Buying your first home also means decorating your first home and it can be quite overwhelming. Should you go for something cool and trendy or should you stick to the classics? What sort of decorative piece should go in that oddly shaped little nook? Should you go with all-wood furniture? Or get some that are also a bit modern and contemporary? What if, after buying everything and putting them where you wanted them to go, you end up not loving the look?
To be honest, that’s a rather common scenario among first-time homeowners decorating their homes. Want to know more about it? Here are some decorating mistakes that a lot of first-time homeowners commit and a few tips on how you can avoid them.
#1 Buying all matching furniture
Unless you want your home to look like something out of a store catalog, never buy all matching furniture. It’s fine to have more than one piece of furniture from the same brand in the same style/line but having everything match to a tee is a different story. It’s neither fun nor stylish and it’s also the least creative way to show your personality which is what you want to do when decorating your home. Take your time to fill your home with pieces that truly reflect your aesthetic. It’s better to live in a partly-furnished home filled with furniture and decor that you love than a fully furnished house that looks dingy and boring.
#2 Buying furniture and decor in the wrong sizes
A humongous chandelier hanging from a low ceiling is going to look comical. A rug so big it almost acts like a carpet for the whole room is going to look off and buying a couch that’s just a tad bit bigger than a love seat for a living room that can comfortably accommodate 20 people is just wrong. When buying furniture, make sure to measure everything to see if it’s proportionate to the area you’re furnishing. This is true for buying decorations as well.
#3 Hanging something on every wall
Hanging something on a wall, whether it be an art piece, a mirror, or some framed photos, is a great way to personalize your space and add that cozy, homey overall vibe to the room. That doesn’t mean, though, that you should aim to hang something on every single wall in your home. It’s your house, not a museum. If you have tons to display, try curating a gallery wall somewhere in your home then keep the rest of the walls clean or with minimal decor.
#4 Not taking the architectural style of your house to mind
If there’s one thing that you should think about more than your personal preference, it’s the architectural style of your house. Is it classic-contemporary? Modern farmhouse? Victorian? Whatever your personal style and preference is, if it doesn’t go well with the architectural style of your new home, it’s going to have to take a back seat to make way for ones that will.
Decorating your first home isn’t easy, but it sure is exciting! Don’t let it stress you out. Instead, take this opportunity to expand your knowledge about decorating and design so you can create a space in your home that you will love coming home to.
