5 Ways To Get The Most Out Of Your Basement

For most people, the basement is simply a space for storing old, unused items. If you’re looking to boost the value of your home and make the most out of every area, however, you should know that there are plenty of things you can do with your basement that can help you achieve that.

Finishing and furnishing your basement will cost you time and money so, unless you’re selling soon, there’s really no need to rush it. You can take your time with remodeling your basement so you can plan it better and really think about what you’re going to do with all that space. Still searching for ideas? Check out what we’ve rounded up below.

Idea #1 Family room

Not a lot of homes these days have a room where every member of the family can just hang out without worrying about messing up the room. A family room is the perfect thing to turn your basement into if you have kids (especially teens) or if you love having family over for fun bonding sessions and sleepovers. Store your collection of card and board games here to play on the weekends or place a huge TV and your choice of gaming console(s) for everyone to enjoy. You can also place a minifridge for snacks and drinks so you don’t have to keep running up to the kitchen for munchies.

Idea #2 In-home theater

The basement is the best place to create an in-home theater, if you’re ever looking to build one. It’s cooler than the rest of the house and naturally darker, too. For maximum comfort, you’re going to want to invest in some comfy seats. If you have the budget for it, recliners are the way to go. Otherwise, a plush sectional should be good too. And, instead of a huge TV, you might want to consider getting a projector and screen combo instead. It’ll give you a more legit movie theater experience right at home.

Idea #3 Home bar

Already have a family room somewhere else in the house? Another thing you can do with your basement is to turn it into a home bar or, as others like to call it, a wet bar. This is another great room to have in your home if you love having people over and entertaining or throwing parties. Build your own bar with everyone’s favorite drinks and play bartender during parties. Just make sure to lock up after, especially if you have kids at home.

Idea #4 Home office

Because of the dingy lighting and the echoey surrounding, most people won’t think of the basement as a good spot for a home office. However, there are plenty of workarounds for these issues and you can definitely create a space that’s 100% conducive for working from home right in your basement.

Idea #5 A Master Suite

The basement is the perfect spot for a master suite. It’s bigger than any bedroom in the house so you’ll have space for all the amenities you could ever dream of having in your room and it’s much more private too. It’s more quiet down there as well so it’s perfect if you’re a light sleeper who wakes up from the slightest bit of noise or if you’re someone who usually works nights and has trouble sleeping during the day.

Other ideas for your basement could include a man cave, a laundry room, a mini library, and more. Depending on how big your basement is, you can even combine two of these ideas to really make the most out of your basement.
