Fall has just begun but many people still have not “fall-proofed” their homes. Seasonal cleaning and decorating are just part of the whole package. There are plenty of other things you need to do in order to get your home ready for fall. Think of it as helping your home transition from hot summer days to the cooler days ahead. Here are 5 important things you need to do around your home for fall.

Fertilize your lawn

 - while fall isn’t typically gardening season, your lawn still needs to be cared for, especially if you want to keep it looking amazing for next spring and summer. You may not see a lot of growth but the grass you have planted on your lawn still has roots growing underneath and it’s going to need fertilizer to stay healthy and avoid damage from the cold weather.

Test winter equipment

 - you may not be seeing snow now but what do you do when winter comes and you’re all snowed in and then discover, just then, that your snowblower isn’t working? Test your winter equipment in fall so you can have everything fixed or replaced before the time comes that you actually need to start using it.

Switch out seasonal clothing

- it’ll be months before you can start wearing those pretty sundresses again so put them away and start swapping out your spring and summer wardrobe for your fall and winter one. Thick and heavy pieces like jackets and coats might need to be aired out first if they’ve been packed away for a long time.

Clean out your hallway closet

- it’s chunky blanket time! Check your hallway closet for whatever fall- and winter-appropriate curtains, blankets, and linens you might need. While you’re there, clean it out and get it ready for the spring and summer stuff you’re about to stash as well. Cleaning your hallway closet before using it again to store different items will ensure that your things stay clean and fresh even while in storage.

Make your home burglar-proof

- burglars are attracted to homes that are dark and poorly lit. In the fall when the nights are darker, burglars tend to become more active which is why it’s important to replace old exterior bulbs with new ones. Light up the walkway/garden if you can and, in case you don’t already have one, get security cameras and place them around your home.

People always tell you to clean your gutter, drain your outdoor pipes, and clean your chimneys before fall starts but the things we mentioned above are often overlooked. Add them to your list of to-do’s for this season and make it a part of your seasonal routine.
