Not everyone has the patience to sit through traffic just to get to their favorite restaurant for a Valentine’s Day dinner. Some people prefer to spend Valentine’s Day at home where they can relax and truly enjoy the night with their loved one. Thinking of staying in tonight? Here are some tips for creating a romantic atmosphere at home to help you celebrate Valentine’s Day at home with your special someone.

Tip #1 Use soft lighting

Turn off those stark white ceiling lights and turn on the lamps instead. If you have a dimmer, dim the lights down low and add candles or use string lights to create a soft, romantic glow to the room. Lighting is very important when setting the mood in a room so don’t skip this tip!

Tip #2 Decorate with fresh flowers

Aside from having a bouquet of your partner’s fresh flowers ready for them when they get home, decorating with fresh flowers at home is also a great way to add a romantic vibe to your home. Have some sitting in a nice vase on the table. Buy a bag of rose petals (most flower shops will give you these for free when you buy a bouquet from them) and sprinkle them on the floor. If you’re feeling a little cheesy, you could do a petal path for your partner to make the night even more romantic.

Tip #3 Play with texture

Silk sheets, a furry throw on the couch, a soft knit blanket and tons of plush pillows -- don’t these all sound like the perfect things to surround yourself with while you wind down for the evening, watching a cutesy movie, and drinking some wine with your loved one? Textures create a comfortable and inviting atmosphere which can really help set the mood.

Tip #4 Play soft, romantic music

Fill the air with sweet melody and play some of your favorite love songs. Ditch the Youtube covers (unless it’s by an artist you know your significant other really loves) and go for classy instrumentals instead. If you’re streaming music from your gadgets, make sure you’re on the Pro or Premium version. You wouldn’t want an ad playing right in the middle of a romantic evening!

Tip #5 Play it up with scents

Whether you prefer scented candles, reed diffusers, essential oils, or scent plug-ins, making sure that the sweet smell of romance wafts through the air is important in setting the mood for your romantic night in.

These tips aren’t just for Valentine’s Day. Save this post and whip it back out next time you want to have a nice, romantic evening with your special someone!
