Building a new kitchen? Most people will say it’s impossible to have the perfect kitchen until you’ve started using it and adding or replacing things along the way. While there may be some truth to that, there’s no harm in trying to plan for what you think might work best for you in your new kitchen. Need tips? Here’s what we’ve gathered from other people and their experiences on their journey to having the perfect kitchen.
Tip #1 Keep your kitchen island sink-free
It might seem like a good idea to have a second sink installed to your kitchen island, but if you’re looking to maximize that space, you’re better off leaving the surface plain and blank. Your kitchen island can serve as a buffet table during special occasions or as a prep station for when you’re hosting dinner for big groups. It can also act as an extension of the dining table. All these functions won’t be possible with a sink in the way. If you really need the space, get a bigger sink or a double sink on your main counter instead.
Tip #2 Say goodbye to overhead cupboards
This one’s a little controversial, but if you think about it, it definitely makes a lot of sense. Think about what you have in your overhead cupboards. Some old Tupperware? Old pots and pans you’ve already forgotten about and haven’t used in years? Some disposable stuff for parties? Because overhead kitchen cupboards are too high up for most people, they’re often being used as a huge junk drawer for things that you no longer use but can’t quite get rid of yet. Build a pantry instead and store everything neatly there!
Tip #3 Place your fridge away from the cooking area
All that heat can’t be good for your fridge. Also, the last thing you want when you’re busy and handling hot stuff in the kitchen are little kids (and other non-cooking people) running around and getting in the way just to get a snack or a drink.
Tip #4 Get pullout cabinets for bulky appliances
Small but bulky kitchen appliances often take over your kitchen counters and it makes the whole kitchen look messy and unorganized. If you have the space and the budget for it, get pullout cabinets/baskets made for bulky appliances that you use every day like your toaster, coffee maker, juicer, etc. This way, they’re easy to access and even easier to put away after use, leaving your countertops clean and clutter-free.
Tip #5 Full height backsplash is better than the standard backsplash
The standard height for a kitchen backsplash is anywhere from 3 to 6 inches from the countertops. If you’re feeling fancy, though, you might want to consider going for a full-height backsplash instead. A full-height backsplash can make your kitchen look prettier, brighter, and more spacious. It’s also easier to clean which is always a plus.
What does your perfect kitchen look like? Do you prefer a small, cozy kitchen where you can prepare intimate dinners for yourself and your family? Or do you like the idea of having a bigger kitchen better so you can entertain more people?
