Some people buy a home with the intention of selling it in the future right from the get-go. They live in the house for a few years, make a few changes that add value to the home, and then sell for profit. Awesome, right? It’s an amazing way to make money and also a great strategy if you want to start slowly working your way towards the ultimate home of your dreams.

“But how do I do that if I don’t have a lot of money to renovate a house?” you ask. Well, it’s not that hard. You just need to know how to add value to your home. There are tons of DIY projects you can take on that will boost your home value. You don’t even need to renovate the whole house. Let’s start with the one thing a lot of people have in their home. It’s something that not everyone uses fully to their advantage: the spare bedroom.

Most people utilize their spare bedrooms as guest bedroom but, honestly, how often do you have other people staying with you (and do you even like it when they do)? Some also have more than one guest bedroom at home which really seems like a waste of space. Instead of letting that space go to waste, why not convert it into something that you can use to hone your skills, indulge in your hobby, generate additional income for the family, or even add value to your home so you can make a profit out of it in the future? Here are 3 fantastic ways to use your spare room and add value to your home.

Idea #1 Turn it into a home office

The pandemic really changed the way we work. Despite the fact that most of the world has somehow “returned to normal,” many have chosen to continue to work from home and it seems like the trend is here to stay for a while. If you’re also in this situation, having a home office is definitely going to be a wise decision to make. Add a sturdy desk and an ergonomic office chair plus some extra storage for your work files and other things and you have yourself a room where you can actually get some work done.

Idea #2 Convert it into a study room

Another thing that has become seemingly normal because of the pandemic is homeschooling. Lots of kids started to get homeschooled during the advent of COVID and lots of them still do it to this day. If your kids are homeschooled and they’re doing their school work on the kitchen table while the spare rooms sits idly by, waiting for friends and family to come visit and stay the night, you know what to do.

Idea #3 Build a family room

Although family rooms are becoming less common these days, having one is definitely a good idea, especially if you have a big family or if you love hosting parties for families and friends. It’s pretty much like a living room except you can fill it up with games and recreational activities like a foosball table, a round table for card and board games, and a big TV and the family’s favorite gaming console.

Of course, if none of these rooms are going to be suitable for your lifestyle and that guest room is something that you get a lot of use out of, feel free to keep it. Otherwise, you can always add a daybed to any of these rooms and make them multi-purpose!
