Moving to a new city can be overwhelming, especially if you’re coming in blind and totally clueless. There are cities that make it such a breeze to move into that, after a few days, you feel settled in and at home. There are also some cities that’ll make you feel as though there’s always something more to discover about it, like you’re forever a tourist and never really a local, no matter how long it’s been.

If you’re moving to Atlanta soon and you’re wondering what the experience will be like, read on. Here’s a quick glimpse of what it’s like moving to Atlanta and a few things you need to know before you move here.

#1 Atlanta has many nicknames

Atlanta goes by many other names, so don’t be confused when people ask you how it’s like living in the “Hollywood of the South,” or how life’s treating you in “The Big Peach.” It’s all code for Atlanta. Other popular nicknames for Atlanta include The Big A, New York of the South, Hot ‘Lanta, A-Town, and more.

#2 It’s a laid-back city

In Atlanta, people stop and smile or wave at people they pass by. Compliments are given freely to anyone, stranger or not, and it is often warmly received and reciprocated. This city lives and breathes southern hospitality so don’t be surprised if the people around you here seem too friendly at times. Worried about moving into a new neighborhood where you don’t know anyone? Don’t worry, you’ll have new besties in a week (maybe even less).

#3 There’s always a festival happening somewhere

Atlanta is a bustling city known for its many festivals. From the casual Candler Park Music and Food Festival and the Music Midtown Atlanta festival to more creative and more festive ones like the Fall-O-Ween Fest and the annual Georgia Festival of Trees, there’s always a festival happening somewhere and you’re more than welcome to come and be a part of the fun!

#4 You’ll never go thirsty in Atlanta

Coca-Cola, everyone’s favorite soft drink, was crafted and created right in the heart of the city. Wherever you go, you can count on the fact that there’s an ice-cold bottle of Coke somewhere to quench your thirst. Need something stronger? Atlanta is home to plenty of indie and artisan breweries, too, so if you’re a beer lover, you’ll feel right at home here.

#5 The cost of living in ATL

Seeing how big of a city Atlanta is might make you think how much you’d need to survive here. Admittedly, the cost of living here ($2134/month) is slightly higher than the national average ($1784/month). However, one can still live quite a comfortable life here since the average salary/wage is significantly higher than the national average.

Atlanta may be a big city, but it’s got a ton of that little town charm that tourists and locals just can’t get enough of. This city is a combination of the things most people won’t find anywhere else, like the busy city scene beautifully blended with nature surrounded by trees and greeneries.
