Sometimes you walk into a room, look around, and think “It’s really nice in here, but I feel like there’s something missing.” That feeling of not seeing something in a room but also not being able to quite put your finger on what it is can be mildly annoying, but you don’t have to endure it. Here are 5 small things you can add to your home that have a big impact on the overall look and feel of a room.

Plants

You wouldn’t even notice it if the room you walked into didn’t have a single pot lying about but your eyes would definitely gravitate towards the greenery if there were a small pot of a succulent sitting on a random shelf or a baby ficus standing in the corner. Adding plants to a room is the best and most low-key way to give it a quick and inexpensive new look. It’s refreshing and pleasing to the eyes and it can even help clean the air! Don’t have a green thumb? That’s okay. These plants are so low-maintenance you can just water them once a week and go on with your life as normal.

The right lighting

Light that’s too bright can drown the details in a room and light that’s too dim may not highlight those details enough. Choosing the correct light color and wattage is definitely not as simple as it seems. If you can’t decide between bright and dim, get adjustable lights instead.

Framed photos

Having framed photos hanging on the wall can give your space a personal touch. It just makes the room look and feel so much warmer, more lived-in, and more inviting. Don’t just go hanging a bunch of random frames on the wall, though. It’s important to plan the layout of your frames on the wall so it looks chic and intentional rather than lazy and tacky.

Candles

Another teeny tiny thing that makes a huge difference when placed into a room, candles can warm up the space and give it a cozier look and feel. Don’t just place plain white candlesticks around the room. You’re not decorating a ritual room for a coven. Instead, get those really pretty ones that come in decorative containers with a really nice scent. If you place them strategically throughout the room, you wouldn’t even need to light them to mildly fill the air with their scent.

Switch plates

Don’t let all the hardwork you put into designing and decorating your room go to waste by having the switchplate for your lights stick out like a sore thumb. Change them into something that matches the aesthetic instead. Another option would be to paint it or use the same wallpaper on your walls to cover it so it blends seamlessly into the wall.

Upgrading a room in your home doesn’t always have to be expensive or take a number of days to finish. These small details are inexpensive and totally DIY-able but they have such a big impact on the overall look and feel of a room.
